The title has a double meaning. Ties are the bonds that give us identity, safety and support: love, belonging, loyalty, DNA and a shared history. They are also what holds us back: obligation, expectation, entanglement and the difficulty of breaking free from the past. Both meanings exist at once, and that is what makes them so powerful.
Where do I end, and where do you begin?
Family Ties looks at how our closest relationships shape who we become, and what we make. Through work by artists bound by love, family, DNA and history, it asks whether art can ever be seen as wholly separate from the people closest to us.
